Success in English! Part 4 - English Course in Indonesia

Studying English in Indonesia is difficult because students rarely have an opportunity to use the language they study in class. However, if you are looking for a hobby or need motivation from your classmates or teachers finding a class in Indonesia might be useful.

Let’s look at some important questions you should ask while selecting a course and teacher. You will notice the first two questions are the same as the questions we suggested you ask while selecting an online course.

1. Who designed the course and is he or she qualified to design a course?
The course designer should be professionally trained with at least a Master’s Degree in TESOL.

2. Does the course have tangible goals “learning outcomes” that are clearly defined?
You should know why you are studying every exercise in the course and it should relate to your goals.

3. Is the teacher qualified?
The teachers should hold an internationally recognized TEFL or TESOL teaching qualification. There are many certificates but the most common first certificate is the CELTA certificate, http://www.cambridgeesol.org/teaching/celta.htm.

4. Are you comfortable with the teacher?
Perhaps the most important factor in selecting a course in Indonesia is your comfort level with the teacher because he or she will provide you with motivation and feedback. If you are not comfortable with the teacher, find another one.

5. What types of activities will you do in class and how much homework is expected?
You should ask about the types of activities in class. There are thousands of different types and any qualified teacher will be able to demonstrate some of them to you. Also, you should ask about the types of homework activities.

6. How much does it cost?
Beware of a wide range of prices for classes and ensure that you are comfortable with the teacher, the types of activities and the goals of the course before committing any money.

Choosing the correct course for you can be difficult. Please take your time and ask lots of questions.Next time we will look at how to evaluate English courses in foreign countries and we will give you questions to ask schools and agents.
