Success in English! Part 3 - Selecting Online English Course

Studying English online can be great for motivated students that have clear learning targets. It is best suited for practicing reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

There are some good online English courses and there are some bad online English courses. Let’s look at some important questions you should ask while selecting the best course for you.

1. Who designed the course and is he or she qualified to design a course?
The course designer should be professionally trained with at least a Master’s Degree in TESOL.

2. Does the course have tangible goals “learning outcomes” that are clearly defined?
You should know why you are studying every exercise in the course and it should relate to your goals.

3. How will you know if your answer in an exercise is correct or incorrect?
Any course must give you feedback to tell you if you understand the content. Usually you will have a list of exercises and a button at the end that you click to find out if you are correct.

4. Is the layout easy to use?
The course should be easy to use.

5. How many hours of content are provided in each course?
Be careful to find a course with enough practice. Sometimes you will find courses with very few exercises and you will end up repeating the same exercise again and again.

6. How much does it cost?
The cost of online English courses varies widely so be careful. Some companies will charge you per course and some will charge you per hour.

Choosing the correct course for you can be difficult. Please take your time and ask lots of questions. If a company cannot answer your question well, choose another company.
